The Ask

Homegrown is a series of narratives featuring members of the African diaspora who are preserving and honoring their culture, roots, and multifaceted identities. The first profile featured climate journalist Mekdela Maskal, who left her Brooklyn apartment to find more space and a sense of self in Northern California, where she’s retracing the contours of her childhood memories.

What We Did

Shot on location at Mekdela’s home and surrounding vistas in Grass Valley, California, SEE ME carefully crafted a nurturing environment for all creatives involved. SEE ME worked as Nike Journal’s production partner throughout all stages of the project in collaboration with Creative Director Ladin Awad, who concepted and developed the ‘Homegrown’ series.
